Today is the 54th Columbus Day Regatta in Miami down to the Florida Keys, one of the largest boating events in South Florida. Dubbed by some as the “Marti Gras” of our area, the long weekend is the official kick off to the prime boating season in our waterfront community. Sailboats docked in Coconut Grove marinas venture out to line to skyline of Biscayne Bay. For some locals and international visitors, this event is an actual exercise of the sport of yachting and for others, it’s a time to party.

The day seems an appropriate ode to Christopher Columbus who sailed the ocean blue in rickety wooden ships in 1492.
